How Do UX Designers Use the Design Thinking Process?

A design thinking process is an iterative process that teams use to understand user challenges, redefine problems and create innovative solutions.

The New York Times Case Study

The redesign of the New York Times app was done by a group of UI and UX designers: Johny Vino, Addi Hou and Ke Hu, using the design thinking process.

Three major things they did well was that:

  • They identified clearly the problem.

These designers did a great user research using surveys and interviews with actual people to discover the problem. Based on their research, the app got less attention because majority can't make out the right time to spend on a news app.

  • They identified their target audience.

Using the information from the research, Johny Vino and his team zoomed in on their audience. This fell between the ages of 20-40, who don't have time to read the news papers.

  • They added a feature, rather than a redesign.

Johny and his team pointed out that the UI of the app was good, so it wasn't necessary to do a completely new app. Instead, with the help of the UX designers the app was given a better user experience. They simply added a Timely feature that can help people manage their time reading the news and still be productive in their day.

These three major things helped to bring back the relevance of the New York Times app.
